Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said that officer was in serious condition, but stable.
Four of Heidler's officers were shot, one fatally.
"Today we lost a good friend of mine - an officer that I've known for 30 years", Heidler said during a news conference Wednesday evening. In all, four city police officers and three Florence County deputies were shot. South Carolina Bar records show he was disbarred in 1984.
Children were among those held inside during the stand-off, according to officials.
It was not clear exactly how the confrontation ended.

"He was a giant of a man, but he was the proverbial gentle giant, and I loved him". Hopkins was allowed to repay the debt over time and surrender his license rather than spend six months in the slammer- but was jailed after failing to return the money as directed in a previous order. The filing does not elaborate on the injury.
