"If McDonald's raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour and respected the constitutional rights of your workers to form a union, it would set an example for the entire fast food industry to follow", the Vermont Senator wrote in a letter to the company's chief executive officer, which he posted to his Twitter account on Thursday. But tucked away in the announcement was the fact that Amazon will phase out its bonus and stock award programs for its hourly workers.

The company wouldn't share details about its restricted stock unit program, though typically it's considered part of an employee's compensation and vests after a period of time.

The new minimum wage, which will begin November 1, will apply to more than 250,000 Amazon employees, as well as more than 100,000 seasonal workers.

An Amazon worker told The Verge that the news was devastating to the employees, most of whom depend on the RSU and variable compensation payment (VCP) incentives. There are now 250,000 people that work for Amazon with plans to hire another 100,000 for the upcoming holiday season. Approximately 17,000 workers in the United Kingdom are also expected to receive salary increases.

Previously, Amazon's starting wages have ranged based on where workers are located. Bernie Sanders launched his full-fledged campaign against the one of the nation's largest companies; unveiling new legislation that would impose a stiff tax for government benefits received by full-time employees.

"I want to give credit where credit is due", Sanders said.

Many Amazon workers responded to Sanders' tweet mentioning that the pay increase will actually come with more cuts than a raise. The company also slightly boosted pay for hourly workers already earning $15 per hour. They have criticized the move as a publicity stunt by Jeff Bezos, the richest person alive worth an estimated US$165 billion.

Inc. says "compensation will be more immediate and predictable" with the changes.
