Artificial sweeteners in Diet Coke ‘can be toxic to your gut bacteria’

According to the findings, popular sweeteners including aspartame and sucralose can have a toxic effect on gut bacteria, potentially causing health problems.

Artificial sweeteners and sports supplements are toxic to digestive gut microbes, says a new study.

Scientists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, analyzed how FDA-approved artificial sweeteners and sport supplements could affect E. coli bacteria.

And while all of the tested sweeteners are deemed "safe for consumption" by the Food and Drug Administration, the results of this study suggest further testing is necessary - especially since these sweeteners are in so many products that most individuals consume them without their knowledge.

Because scientists now claim that sweeteners found in Diet Coke and other soft drinks could damage the naturally occurring bacteria in your stomach.

The only thing we can say with any certainty is that consuming moderate amounts of artificial sweeteners probably won't cause cancer in humans. As Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) looks ahead to turning 50 in 2020, AABGU imagines a future that goes beyond the walls of academia.

"Diet" and "Zero" drinks are marketed as a healthy alternative - but the sweetener-laden pop could actually carry serious health risks, researchers warn.

However, where weight loss is concerned, a study at the end of 2016 found that in the short-term, deciding between sugary beverages and beverages with artificial sweetener produce the same result.
