‘Conjuring 3’ Draws ‘Curse of La Llorona’ Director Michael Chaves

Not much is known about the plot for Conjuring 3 just yet however.

EW has confirmed that the third Conjuring film will be directed by Michael Chaves. The first two Conjuring films starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life supernatural investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Chaves' most recent film was New Line's The Curse of La Llorona, which Wan produced and is due to hit theaters in 2019. Chaves, for his part, is a fan of the previous two films and considers it a "total thrill to be working with James and New Line again".

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that director James Wan is stepping away from The Conjuring franchise for its upcoming third entry. "The movies are the rare combination that deliver both tremendous heart and awesome scares".

Made for just $20 million, The Conjuring made nearly $320 million worldwide and spawned a sequel and plethora of spin-offs like Annabelle, The Nun and the upcoming Crooked Man feature. They're already in the midst of pre-production for the third film in the Annabelle series, and a sequel to The Nun seems likely. The studio is also reportedly working on a Crooked Man spinoff, inspired by the lanky demonic force introduced in The Conjuring 2, though it's been some time since there was an update on that front. "David [Leslie] Johnson is working on the screenplay, and I feel pretty confident they will have that one up and running next year", producer Peter Safran told CinemaBlend last month.

The Conjuring 3 is also getting a bit of a shakeup in the scripting department and will be the first without a script by Chad and Carey Hayes.
