Kyrie Irving planning to re-sign with Celtics next summer

Traded to Boston from the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2017, Irving led the Celtics in both points (24.4) and assists (5.1) per game last season, but missed the entire postseason due to knee surgery.

If Irving declines his player option for the 2019-20 season, he will be an unrestricted free agent in July and will likely command a max contract.

"I've shared it with some of my teammates, as well as the organization and everyone else in Boston".

Last week, in an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols the five-time All-Star said, "Even if I ever try to think about that thought of going elsewhere, it would be like, 'What are you thinking?' We're pretty f-- good here".

If Irving had signed an extension with Boston this past summer, he would have potentially left more than $80 million on the table than if he waited and re-signed with the Celtics next summer.

According to The Athletic, Irving has communicated to Celtics brass he is "verbally committed" to returning to Boston in free agency.

"Contractually, financially, it just doesn't make any sense", Irving said. "It's a point in my professional career where it is a big-time decision".

Despite having Irving and Gordon Hayward on the sidelines, the Celtics took LeBron James and the Cavaliers all the way to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. "Winning a championship in Boston is different than winning one in Cleveland".
