  • Man makes shocking discovery about 30-year-old doorstop

The doorstop that a MI man had been using since 1988 has turned out to be a meteorite worth $100,000.

As the farmer was showing him around the property, they went out to a shed. He and his father dug it out the next morning and it was still warm.

A man has discovered a rock he's been using as a doorstop for 30 years is actually worth more than A$140,000.

The new owner came into possession of the meteorite after the farm was sold in 1988.

Central Michigan University says Thursday that the 10.2kg space rock was recently identified by Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences professor Dr Monaliza Sirbescu after the owner "brought it to her out of curiosity".

Upon receiving the meteorite, Sirbescu evaluated it and discovered it was an iron-nickel meteorite, composed of 8 to 8.5 percent iron and 11.5 percent nickel. The man then got curious if the large rock had worth as he read accounts of people buying and selling small pieces of meteorites.

For double verification, a slice of it was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, which validated it was in fact a meteorite, according to the press release. A mineral museum is also looking at buying the rock.

Australia to make sanitary products exempt from sales tax
It's especially unfair, too, given that most other health products are exempt from the GST, including condoms, lube and Viagra. SCOTT Morrison and Josh Frydenberg are facing a revolt over their proposal to change the way GST revenue is carved up.

"I walked in there and there's this rock and i said you got everything all cleaned up but what's this? and he said oh that's a meteorite", says David, who owns the meteorite.

The Smithsonian is considering purchasing the meteorite for display. If it can not purchase it, the slice will stay in the collection. Millions of meteorites enter the Earth's atmosphere every year but the vast majority vaporise before they can make it to the ground, making intact specimens highly valuable.

It's a story that began out of this world almost a hundred years ago when a meteorite crashed down to earth near Edmore, Michigan. He is considered the guru of iron meteorites, Sirbescu said, and is doing a neutron activation analysis to determine its chemical composition.

A mineral museum in ME also was considering buying it, and the owner herself - a collector - said she might purchase it.

Regardless of how much that is, Sirbescu feels that she, CMU and her students already have benefited.
