Infamous rap mogul Marion Hugh "Suge" Knight, 53, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Thursday for a 2015 hit-and-run, according to Fox 32 Chicago.

The prison sentence represents the low point of a long decline for Knight, one of the most important figures in the history of hip-hop. At his pinnacle in the mid-1990s, he was putting out wildly popular records that are now considered classics from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.
The courtroom was filled by almost two dozen relatives of 55-year-old Terry Carter, including a 96-year-old aunt who like many of them cried and consoled one another. He did not address the court.
The probation violation stemmed from a scuffle he was involved in at a Las Vegas hotel in September 1996, hours before Shakur was shot to death while riding in a auto being driven by Knight on the Las Vegas Strip.

The expected prison time is in relation to a January 2015 incident that occurred near the set of a commercial being shot for the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

The Death Row founder will be credited time served for the 3 1/2 years he spent in jail leading up to his sentencing.
Prosecutors said he would have received 11 years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter count, but he had a prior conviction under California's three strike law.
The agreement also clears Knight in two other cases, both from 2014.
