Red tide plagues Florida beaches on all sides of state

County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said public beaches would be closed north of Haulover Inlet, an area marked by secluded green spaces, a boat marina and a nude beach on a barrier island about 15 miles (25 km) north of downtown Miami. But no red tide has been found on beaches there.
Wednesday's map showed low to medium levels of red tide all along the Florida Panhandle.
Dead fish were reported along the entire coastline of Palm Beach County, which first showed signs of red tide on Saturday.
The county closed its beaches at Boca South Inlet Park in Boca Raton and at Ocean Inlet and Gulfstream parks in Boynton Beach because of rising complaints by lifeguards there of allergy-like symptoms related to red tide, such as coughing, irritated throats and wheezing.
Palm Beach County officials said Wednesday that beaches will remain closed until Friday.
State scientists also found red tide algae further up the east coast in Palm Beach County at the end of September.
Beaches in Broward County are still waiting for their results.
The toxic algae has driven away swimmers and littered west coast beaches with dead fish for months.
The next complete red tide status report will be posted Friday. "Fort Lauderdale and other beaches in Broward County are open".
"This year has been an anomalous year for red tide", Shay said, but the algae's reach to the east coast, "it happens".
