The head of Centcom also slammed Russia's deployment of S-300 missile defense system to Syria, calling it "irresponsible". Regarding the S-300, he said that it "will provide a new, quality layer of air defense" and further such steps will be forthcoming.

Army General Joseph Votel, who oversees US forces in the Middle East, said the deployment also appeared to be an effort by Moscow to help shield "nefarious activities" by Iranian and Syrian forces in the country.

Iranian military support has been vital to helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad through his country's civil war.

The IRGC announced it launched six medium-range ballistic missiles at 0200 h local time (2230 h GMT on 30 September) at the headquarters of the "the Ahvaz terrorist group" that was responsible for a shooting attack on a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz that killed 25 people on 22 September.

The delivery of the game-changing aerial defense system to Syria came after a Russian jet was mistakenly downed by Syrian air defenses during an Israeli air raid in Latakia province, killing 15 Russian serviceman. Israel received the same concession regarding selling the S-300 to Iran. Last month, Greece hosted U.S. General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in Athens.

"And it could be for the Americans too".

Israel together with the United States have vociferously opposed the decision by Russian Federation to supply weaponry to Syria which they claim could exacerbate an already volatile situation and could impede Israel's efforts to prevent Iran from gaining a foothold in the region.

"We have made it clear to the Russians at the highest levels in recent days that we have no interest in confronting Russia or Syria", Israeli Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi was quoted as saying by the Israeli Broadcast Authority.

"Our forces here have been operating under a latent anti-air threat for some time and we will continue to do so", he said. Iran has dismissed USA demands that it leave Syria.

Votel suggested that countries in the region had good reason to be concerned about Iran's activities in Syria. "And I believe the Russians understand how important this policy is for us".
