  • US Navy planning ‘show of force’ to warn China

The United States Pacific Fleet is drafting plans for a global show of force to warn China and demonstrate resolve to deter Beijing's military actions, CNN reported, citing several unidentified USA defence officials.

The US's move comes in a bid to show Washington's intentions to deter and counter any military stand-off, American defence officials said.

The network claims the fleet is set to carry out a "highly focused and concentrated set of exercises involving USA warships, combat aircraft and troops" for a week during November.

The plan proposes sailing ships and flying jets near China's territorial waters in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait to show the "right to free navigation" in worldwide waters.

The US Navy proposal focuses on operations in the Pacific, but the CNN report said they could stretch as far as the western coast of South America, where China is expanding investments and diplomatic relationships.

Last month, roughly 3,200 Chinese soldiers and 30 aircraft participated in Russia's largest military drills since the Cold War.

If your cellphone gets an alert this afternoon, heres why
On social media, many expressed unease with the test of the new presidential messaging system because there is no way to opt out. But how you feel about national alerts may have a lot to do with how you feel about whoever happens to occupy the White House.

The defence officials further asserted that the United States does not want to engage in any military skirmishes with China.

"We plan for a variety of contingencies and different operations, but we do not comment on future operations", said US Navy Captain William Kafka, spokesman for the Indo-Pacific Command.

For now, the global show of force proposal will concentrate on a series of operations in the Pacific Ocean, near the Chinese territorial waters.

Earlier this week, the USA accused China's navy of "unsafe and unprofessional" conduct near an occupied reef in the South China Sea after a Chinese destroyer manoeuvred close to the bow of an American warship attempting to assert navigation rights.

In a statement, the US Navy had said that the two vessels came agonisingly close of colliding with each other, with a distance of 41 metres and lashed out at the Chinese warship which was "conducting a series of increasingly aggressive manoeuvres, accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area".
