Amazon.com chief executive Jeff Bezos has defended his company's effort to aid the U.S. military with its advanced technology, after the bidding for government contracts by the tech industry triggered a recent wave of employee protests at some companies.
"If big tech companies are going to turn their back on US Department of Defence, this country is going to be in trouble", Bezos said Monday at an event for Wired magazine's 25th anniversary in San Francisco.
"We are going to continue to support the DoD, and I think we should", Bezos said.
Amazon is bidding for a 10-year contract with the Defense Department known as the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure project, JEDI, to offer cloud computing services worth up to $10 billion.
In an apparent retort at President Donald Trump's immigration policies, Bezos added, "I'd let them all in if it were up to me".
Bezos also leads the private space exploration firm Blue Origin, which has obtained USA military contracts.
Google's announcement that it was dropping out of the running for the winner-take-all deal came months after the company decided not to renew its contract with a Pentagonartificial intelligence program, after extensive employee protests about the internet giant working with the military.
"First, we couldn't be assured that it would align with our AI Principles and second, we determined that there were portions of the contract that were out of scope with our current government certifications", Google said in a statement.
While Silicon Valley has always been building hardware and software for the USA military and law enforcement, employees at technology giants like Google and Microsoft have in recent months protested at such defence contracts due to increasing ethical concerns.
"Many Microsoft employees don't believe that what we build should be used for waging war", read a blog post on Medium.
"The contract is massive in scope and shrouded in secrecy, which makes it almost impossible to know what we as workers would be building".
The billionaire seems to be back to his usual antics after a $20 million settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The application identifies Teslaquila as either " distilled agave liquor " or " distilled blue agave liquor ".
