  • WHO to meet on Congo's Ebola outbreak as toll soars

The Emergency Committee, scheduled for Wednesday at WHO headquarters in Geneva, will decide whether the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of worldwide concern, and what recommendations should be made to manage the spread of the disease.

The committee of experts may make recommendations to manage the outbreak, which was declared on August 1 and has worsened, with a risk of the virus spreading from northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo into Uganda and Rwanda.

At least 33 people have been infected with the deadly Ebola virus in the past week, 24 of which have since passed away, the health ministry of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said.

The agency identified 39 new confirmed cases were reported between 1 and 11 October, 32 of which are from Beni.

Aid organizations have expressed alarm as the rate of new cases has more than doubled this month and community resistance to Ebola containment efforts in some cases has turned violent.

The Congolese army has blamed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a notorious rebel group, for that attack.

The deadly haemorrhagic fever, which spreads through contact with bodily fluids, causes fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, impaired liver and kidney function and, in some cases, bleeding internally and externally. Of them, just over half recovered, 20 were still in hospital and the rest died.

Congo has experienced 10 Ebola outbreaks but this is the first time the disease has appeared close to the border with Uganda, where people and goods frequently cross.
