Le ton monte, les insultes fusent: "Ton Jésus n'est qu'un batard sans père", lance une des femmes à Asia Bibi qui réplique que Jésus lui est mort sur la croix pour sauver l'humanité, alors que le prophète Mahomet n'a rien fait. Elle a finalement été acquittée en appel, mercredi.

Paysanne et mère de cinq enfants, Asia Bibi avait eu une dispute avec une musulmane au sujet d'un verre d'eau. Asia Bibi qui se trouve actuellement incarcérée dans une prison à Multan va être libérée " immédiatement " a-t-il précisé.

Parce qu'elle a répondu aux femmes qui l'accusaient d'avoir sali l'eau, cette mère de cinq enfants a été accusée de "blasphème", un acte passible de la peine de mort au Pakistan.

Elle avait été condamnée à la pendaison en 2010 et ses différents appels avaient été jusqu'ici tous rejetés. Quelques semaines plus tard, un ministre pakistanais avait plaidé pour sa libération auprès du président pakistanais. Une grâce présidentielle avait toutefois été interdite, la procédure d'appel étant déjà lancée.

Le blasphème est un sujet extrêmement sensible au Pakistan, pays très conservateur où l'islam est religion d'État. Le verdict pourrait aujourd'hui susciter la fureur des milieux religieux fondamentalistes.

Lors de l'examen de son recours, début octobre, les juges de la Cour suprême avaient semblé s'interroger sur le bien-fondé de l'accusation. "Je ne vois aucune remarque désobligeante envers le Coran dans le rapport d'enquête", avait observé le juge Saqib Nisar, tandis qu'un second juge, Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, relevait plusieurs points de non-respect des procédures.

Mercredi, la capitale Islamabad a été placée sous haute sécurité, avec des barrages sur les routes notamment à proximité des quartiers où vivent les magistrats et la communauté diplomatique. La loi prévoit jusqu'à la peine de mort pour les personnes reconnues coupables d'offense à l'islam.

Les militants du groupe religieux extrémiste devenu parti politique, le Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) a organisé des rassemblements contre la libération de la chrétienne, allant jusqu'à menacer les juges en charge de l'affaire, "Les musulmans pakistanais prendront les mesures adéquates face aux juges (.) et les conduiront à une fin horrible". Les partisans de ce parti, qui fait de la punition du blasphème sa raison d'être, ont manifesté mi-octobre pour demander que la condamnation à mort soit confirmée.

On ignorait dans l'immédiat ce qu'il adviendrait de Mme Bibi après son acquittement. Son mari, accueilli à Londres par l'ONG catholique Aide à l'Église en détresse (AED) et interrogé le 13 octobre par l'AFP, avait estimé qu'elle ne pourrait "pas rester au Pakistan avec la loi [sur sur le blasphème]".

En 2015, l'une de ses filles avait rencontré ce dernier. Peu après la condamnation, un imam avait offert une récompense pour la mort d'Asia Bibi.

Sa famille avait reçu des menaces et avait été contrainte de fuir son domicile.

Un autre de ses défenseurs, l'ex-gouverneur de la province pakistanaise du Pendjab, Salman Taseer, l'un des rares politiciens du pays à oser critiquer ouvertement l'islamisme, avait été assassiné en 2011 par l'un de ses propres gardes du corps, qui l'avait criblé de 29 balles dans un quartier cossu de la capitale Islamabad. Elle s'est ensuite tournée vers les autres femmes présentes dans le champ, leur disant qu'Asia Bibi avait souillé l'eau du puits en en buvant.

Le cas d'Asia Bibi avait eu un retentissement international, attirant l'attention des papes Benoît XVI et François.

Au Pakistan même, l'histoire de cette chrétienne d'origine modeste divise fortement l'opinion.
