Donald Trump is poised to start withdrawing troops from the US-Mexico border as early as this week, according to a report that prompted instant criticism that their deployment was a political stunt. "Illegal Immigrants trying to come into the United States of America, often proudly flying the flag of their nation as they ask for U.S. Asylum, will be detained or turned away".

Mexican officials expect the number of migrants aggregating in Tijuana near the San Ysidro border crossing to exceed 10,000 soon, and that swelling number of asylum-seekers will require housing, which the government says it does not have the resources to provide.

"Out! Out!" they chanted, demanding that the caravan be diverted and anxious about the impact of many hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers stuck in their city for months.

The fair opened just south of the US border in Tijuana Monday, providing work permits and a humanitarian visas to members of the caravan.

In protests on Sunday, about 400 Tijuana residents waved Mexican flags, sang the Mexican national anthem and chanted "Out!" "We want them to return to Honduras", said Rivera.

The migrant caravan has been moving slowly toward the border, with an estimated 3,000 already amassing in Tijuana over the past week, and thousands more still making the long trek.

While many in Tijuana are sympathetic to the migrants' plight and trying to assist, with a local priest handing out donated clothes at the weekend, some locals have shouted insults, hurled rocks and even thrown punches at them.

The Department of Homeland Security is gathering intelligence from paid undercover informants inside the migrant caravan that is now reaching the California-Mexico border as well as monitoring the text messages of migrants, according to two DHS officials.

Still, the reduction in troop levels now ― after Trump largely stopped tweeting or talking about the caravans post-midterm elections, but while thousands of migrants are still en route to the USA ― is likely to bolster critics who said the deployment was more about pre-election fear-mongering than responding to a need. Dozens of the more radical protesters then marched to an outdoor sports complex near downtown where 2,500 migrants are staying, sleeping on dirt fields and under bleachers.

Other bands of mostly Salvadorans followed, with a small group setting off on Sunday from San Salvador.

"If CBP have reliable information that one of their ports is about to get rushed with a mob, or something like that that could put their agents at risk, they could ask us to completely close the port", he said.

"Likewise, the U.S. is ill-prepared for this invasion and will not stand for it, they are causing crime and big problems in Mexico, Go home".
