Pompeo: Iran Increasing Ballistic Missile Activity

Iran is conducting 40 to 50 such tests each year, actions that are destabilising the Middle East, he said in NY, accusing Tehran of exporting those systems to Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The European Union's current, outgoing, and incoming Security Council members also gave a statement before the session began, saying, "We call on Iran to refrain from such activities, which deepen mistrust and increase regional tensions and are in non-conformity with" the U.N. Security Council resolution. "We also call on the council to establish inspection and interdiction measures, in ports and on the high seas, to thwart Iran's continuing efforts to circumvent existing arms restrictions".

Under U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231, which enshrined the nuclear deal in 2015, Iran is "called upon" to refrain from work on ballistic missiles created to deliver nuclear weapons for up to eight years. He said the deal was flawed because it did not include curbs on Iran's development of ballistic missiles or its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq.

The report, the sixth by the Secretary-General, also praised Europe for "their initiatives to protect the freedom of their economic operators to pursue legitimate business with the Islamic Republic of Iran, in full accordance with resolution" that oversees the Iran deal.

Iran also has admitted test-firing a medium-range ballistic missile on December 1.

Iran has always declared that its nuclear program was for purely peaceful purposes. "The E.U. and all 28 member states deeply regretted these US decisions", said Serge Christiane, a senior diplomat with the E.U. delegation at the United Nations who went on to "express honest thanks" to Iran "for their unwavering commitment to the nuclear deal".

Several European allies echoed those concerns, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and France - all three of which Pompeo thanked in his remarks.

European governments have said they share U.S. concerns but believe they should be addressed through a supplementary agreement, made more difficult to achieve by the hard line from Trump.

Iranian Ambassador Eshagh Al Habib pushed back against claims that his nation is failing to comply with the nuclear deal and accused the USA of violating the agreement by undermining its implementation.

As U.S. President Donald Trump re-imposed harsh economic sanctions on Iran last month, hackers scrambled to break into personal emails of American officials tasked with enforcing them, The Associated Press has found - another sign of how deeply cyberespionage is embedded into the fabric of US-Iranian relations.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed on Tuesday that it recently test-fired a missile, according to the semiofficial Fars News. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said, "We test our missiles, and the recent test was important too".

Earlier this month, Pompeo said Iran had tested a medium-range ballistic missile, claiming the launch was a violation of a United Nations resolution.

Pompeo said that regardless of the changed language, the world "must agree to stop it now".

The UN report also outlined objections to the USA decision, saying the accord "is fundamental to regional and global peace and security", and suggested that Iran's missile tests should be addressed separately by UN members.

Hajizadeh said Iran holds up to 50 missile tests a year.

A United States defense official directly familiar with the initial data from the launch told CNN that the launch did not appear to demonstrate any capabilities that the U.S. was not aware of, and did not pose a direct threat.
