Britons could face diet change under hard Brexit

  • May defends Brexit plan as ministers set out rival alternatives

Rudd, who campaigned for Remain in 2016, admitted her view might "distress" some Conservative colleagues, but underlined she did not back holding another poll and was fully committed to pushing May's deal through Parliament.

But she is set to face a New Year Brexit battle as Tory Remainers join forces with Labour MPs to kill off a "no deal".

Mrs May and her colleagues, including David Mundell, the Scottish Secretary, have in terms suggested a no-deal Brexit would be "chaotic" for the United Kingdom economy, yet their critics claim - to maximise the chances of Tory, DUP and even some Labour rebel MPs backing her plan - they are waiting to the very last moment in a parliamentary game of brinkmanship before accepting, finally, it is dead.

According to the Times, the government is now preparing for what will happen to food supplies if we leave without a deal.

The MPs hope that they can stop a no deal Brexit and get the Government to pursue a "plan B" if Mrs May's deal is voted down as expected next month.

Cabinet is meant to stick with an agreed line, but last night, work and pensions secretary Amber Rudd told ITV's Peston she could see the argument for a second referendum if Mrs May's plan fails to get through the meaningful vote in January.

Yemeni mom on way to give dying son kiss after getting waiver
Mrs Swileh landed at San Francisco International Airport late on Wednesday and was greeted by crowds of well-wishers. America agreed on Tuesday to issue her a waiver from the ban on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries.

'But what we already saw yesterday, in the EU's preparations which they have very belatedly started to make for no deal, is that there are going to be agreements on things like aviation, on things like haulage, on things like tourist travellers and so on'.

The prospect of the deal being rejected by MPs has led to open speculation within Government about what happens next.

House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom said a so-called "people's vote" would be unacceptable and a "managed" no deal would be an alternative.

Her comments are at odds with those of some of her Cabinet colleagues, including David Gauke.

He reportedly said on Tuesday: 'The responsibility of cabinet ministers is not to propagate unicorns but to slay them'. I myself think it would undermine the biggest democratic exercise ever, where we had a clear majority to leave the European Union.

At this point, if a no-deal were indeed ruled out, then the PM would be resigned to having to work with Parliament to put before MPs indicative votes on all the main options. She has rejected calls for a second referendum or to test support for different Brexit options in parliament. With the European Union offering little in the way of concessions to win over MPs, an increasing number of politicians are calling for a second referendum - something some of her ministers say could be avoided if the government tested Brexit scenarios in parliamentary votes.
