U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar entered the 2020 presidential race on Sunday, becoming the first moderate in an increasingly crowded field of Democrats vying to challenge Republican President Donald Trump. But she did bemoan the conduct of "foreign policy by tweet" and said Americans must "stop the fear-mongering and stop the hate".
She is citing the need to "heal the heart of our democracy and renew our commitment to the common good".
Ms Klobuchar, 58, now in her third six-year term as a senator for Minnesota, will seek to position herself as a contrast to Mr Trump, who is expected to be the Republican candidate in the November 2020 election, focusing on both policy differences but also style and tact.
She has said that success could translate to other Midwestern states such as MI and Wisconsin, reliably Democratic in presidential races for decades until Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton. She barely registers in early opinion polls of potential Democratic candidates.
Klobuchar is pointing to her record of working with Republicans, and says the country is exhausted of what she calls "the shutdowns and the putdowns, the gridlock and the grandstanding".
Klobuchar has pointed to her broad appeal in her state. Her party is trying to win back voters in a region that help put Donald Trump in the White House in 2016. She has drawn support from voters in urban, suburban and rural areas, including in dozens of counties Trump won in 2016. "I don't know that coming from Minnesota gives her any advantage with Iowans".
Klobuchar won her most recent Senate race in November with more than 60 percent of the vote. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., to help fund the new bridge and get it completed at a faster-than-usual pace. That's community. That's a shared story.
In her announcement, Klobuchar claimed communities are "worn down by the petty and vicious nature of our politics".
But her legislative record has drawn criticism from both the GOP and some fellow Democrats. Some progressives say she lacks the kind of fire and bold ideas needed to bring significant change and excite voters.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar's mistreatment of her office staff began more than a decade ago and eventually caused such concerns that in 2015, then-Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) spoke to her privately and told her to change her behavior, multiple sources have confirmed to HuffPost.
When Klobuchar asked Kavanaugh whether he ever had had so much to drink that he didn't remember what happened, he turned the question around.
Unruffled, Klobuchar continued as Kavanaugh asked again.
"When you have a parent who's an alcoholic, you're pretty careful about drinking", she said.
Among the other Midwestern lawmakers who could also seek the nomination are Senator Sherrod Brown of OH, who has been visiting early-voting states, and Pete Buttigieg, the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who established an exploratory committee last month. Recently, she pushed for Senate investigations into whether Facebook Inc broke the law when it resisted oversight on how Russians used its platform to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.
"This is the moment for the Midwest", she said, "and we don't want to be forgotten again in a national election".
