"We have not asked and will not ask for permission to develop different types of [.] missiles and will continue our path and our military power", Rouhani said in a speech at Tehran's Azadi square, where tens of thousands gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of Iran's Islamic revolution.

The marchers were also seen setting on fire American and Israeli flags, and stepping on a caricature of US President Donald Trump, who in 2018 made a decision to reimpose economic sanctions on the country.

Among those present at the march were President Hassan Rouhani and reformist members of parliament, Mohammad Reza Aref and Ali Motahari, as well as senior Muslim leaders.

Tehran was determined to expand its military power despite pressure from hostile states, Rouhani said.

Local reports say that similar demonstrations were held in other major cities, including Mashhad, the second largest metropolis in Iran.

US Team In Beijing For Trade Talks After IMF "Storm" Warning
The Chinese delegation will be led by Vice Premier Liu He, who will be joined by central bank governor Yi Gang. Gerrish left his hotel in downtown Beijing on Monday morning without talking to the media.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran's foreign ministry declared that since 1979, the nation is now "more mature, prudent, and powerful than ever".

The large turnout at these state-sponsored rallies comes as Iranians faces rising prices and food shortages which have triggered waves of protests.

Iranian officials said the move amounted to "economic warfare".

Later that year, Iranian militants took dozens of people hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran, sparking the first round of sanctions from Washington and causing a lasting rupture in countries' relations.

Iran displayed its ballistic missile capabilities during a parade marking the anniversary, including the Zolfaqar, a ground-to-ground missile with a 700 km (435 miles) range and the Qiam, with a range of 800 km, according to Tasnim news agency.

"The enemy can not ask us to leave the region".
