Brexit Vote: Theresa May loses second Brexit vote

Theresa May will have to call a general election if the Commons rejects her Brexit deal on Tuesday evening, a senior Tory MP has said.

If a no-deal Brexit is rejected today, MPs are very likely to vote tomorrow for the government to request an extension to Article 50, to allow the United Kingdom more time to find a path through this parliamentary deadlock.

"It is not sustainable, the current situation in Parliament".

But what I hope is a cause for optimism is that the Prime Minister seemed to discuss what many of us have been waiting for, for a long time, the opportunity for Parliament to give direction either in terms of a different kind of deal or, indeed, she even mentioned a second referendum.

So if MPs prefer an "orderly exit" over no-deal and no Brexit, they will eventually have to vote positively in favour of a deal.

Mrs May has given Conservative MPs a free vote tonight, meaning they can vote with their conscience rather than follow the party line.

"That's the right thing to do and she has my support".

Some 75 Conservative MPs rebelled against the government while just three Labour MPs and four independents joined the 235 Tories who backed it.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn wants to find a deal for a "softer Brexit", or failing that new elections in the UK.

He is among a group of MPs that have tabled an amendment calling for a short extension to Brexit to May 22, and for a "standstill" agreement lasting until the end of 2021 during which time the United Kingdom would observe European Union rules while a trade deal is negotiated. "Should there be a United Kingdom reasoned request for an extension, the EU27 will consider it and decide by unanimity".

"The Prime Minister's negotiations have failed".
