Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer says the Chiefs would get a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in the trade for Ford.

The 49ers are adding to their defensive arsenal with the reported trade for Chiefs franchise player, Dee Ford as trade season in the National Football League continues to deliver eye-popping headlines. Rapoport was the first to report that the 49ers were "deep in talks" with the Chiefs for Ford.

Ford was initially scheduled to become a free agent until the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on the linebacker at the cost of $15.4 million for 2019.

The deal clears $15 million in salary-cap space for the Chiefs. That deal can become official on Wednesday.

When this deal becomes official - which can not occur until after 3 p.m. CT Wednesday at the earliest - Ford's contract is expected to be for five years and $87.5 million, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson. Kansas City remained open to trading Ford as the team shifts from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense.

Ford, who was selected out of Auburn with the 23rd overall pick in 2014, is coming off his best season. Per the report, the teams have "agreed to parameters on a deal" that would send Ford to help San Francisco's pass rush-starved defense.

After an excellent 2018 season with 13 sacks and 55 tackles, Ford has earned a payday. The Green Bay Packers were the other team often mentioned in rumors, but Green Bay signed two pass rushers on Tuesday with the rumored deals for Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith-formerly of the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens respectively. Ford has racked up double-digit sacks in two of his past three seasons.
