Busch will compete in Sunday's TicketGuardian 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event at ISM Raceway (3:30 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) before running both the Cup and Xfinity races next weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
Busch had one of the most dominant cars throughout the race on Sunday, and led a race-high 177 laps.
As happy as Busch was with the win, he also gave himself some grief because it could easily have given him a second straight weekend sweep. Running in Blaney's wake for 37 laps, Busch finally made the winning pass on Lap 296 of 312 and nursed his vehicle to the finish line.
"We knew the 12 [Blaney] was really really fast. Ugh", Busch said following the race. "I wish we would have swept last weekend, too, with two weekend sweeps in a row". That's what it looked like all of us were doing.
"I got that restart behind Kyle and was able to get a huge run in (Turns) 1 and 2. Just an awesome day for us here at ISM Raceway". Martin Truex, Jr. was the runner-up, followed by Ryan Blaney. "Just a good day, overall, for our Bass Pro Camry". Mike Harmon's crew chief was also fined. James [Small, engineer] and all the guys, we're starting to click. Two second places is pretty decent. When Blaney went into fuel saving mode it allowed Busch to catch then pass him.
"I knew before we went back green that we were going to be right on the verge", Busch told reporters. "Once I got to Blaney, I was able to kind of save a little bit and try to take care of my tires for the rest of the traffic I had to get through". "You got to go race hard first and then you have to worry about fuel afterwards". It was a good call to take two tires. I'm proud of this team. Last year, we gave it a shot with eight.
Aric Almirola led several laps after taking two tires but was overtaken for the lead by Blaney with 61 laps remaining.
Blaney won the opening 75-lap stage of the race. Over the last 22 laps, Truex made up about seven seconds on Busch, but that still left him 1.259 seconds behind the leader at the end of the race. As a result, he retook the lead. Of the front four, Busch was the only driver who took four fresh tires during his most recent pit stop.
The second stage ended under caution when the yellow flag was displayed after Alex Bowman hit the wall on lap 148.
Aric Almirola, who like Blaney took two tires on the Lap 221 pit stop, ran fourth, followed by Daytona 500 victor Denny Hamlin and Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Kyle Larson and Kurt Busch. "I was just trying to do everything I could to get it shut off, and yeah, really unfortunate for us today". We keep chipping away.
"It definitely was a good weekend after the start of the year we had", Blaney said. "Let's set it at a 100 and see if we can't get there".
