  • The first web page was created by CERN he European Organization for Nuclear Research

Envisaged in the lab of CERN, a large nuclear physics laboratory in Switzerland, the World Wide Web was first introduced as a proposal by Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help his colleagues in CERN share information with different computers.

"Not to be confused with the internet, which had been evolving since the 1960s, the World Wide Web is an online application built upon innovations like HTML language, URL "addresses", and hypertext transfer protocol, or HTTP", says Google in a blog post. The Contract, which has been backed by companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook, outlines a set of principles to which governments, companies and citizens should commit to, including free, affordable access to the internet and respect for consumers' privacy and personal data.

Berners-Lee wasn't looking to transform modern life when he invented the World Wide Web; he had just gotten exhausted of having to switch computers whenever he needed to access information that wasn't on his main work computer.

Twenty years later, the World Wide Web made this technology user-friendly and accessible to the public. "The web is not the web we wanted in every respect". The inventor also remains optimistic about its long term prospects saying, "If we give up on building a better web now, then the web will not have failed us".

Berners-Lee reminisced about how he was really out to get disparate computer systems to talk to one another, and resolve the "burning frustration" over a "lack of interoperability" of documentation from disparate computing systems used at CERN in the late 1980s. In practice, the access to a browser on a home computer made the internet easily accessible to consumers for the first time.

Des conférences nationales ainsi que 18 " conférences citoyennes régionales " sont programmées en mars. Pendant le grand débat, le pouvoir d'achat est au cœur des préoccupations des Français.

The boss, Mike Sendell, had penciled in an assessment of his idea as "vague but exciting".

"While the first category is impossible to eradicate completely, we can create both laws and code to minimize this behavior, just as we have always done offline", Berners-Lee writes. Businesses are asked to keep internet prices low so many people can use the web. "The decision to make the Web an open system was necessary for it to be universal", he wrote.

"The openness is wonderful, the connectivity is wonderful, the fact that it was created as a network for academics who are kind of into trusting each other..." she said.

Now with the Web, "there's an enormous amount of centralization going on, with a few big players becoming gatekeepers".
