Theresa May set to vote to block no deal

According to the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, general elections are held every five years.

If Mrs May won the election, it would give her the political mandate for her deal.

The DUP's Ian Paisley said he would like to see the no-deal option left on the table in negotiations.

It expects Prime Minister Theresa May to ask for a delay to Brexit to avoid economic disruption should Britain leave with no plan in place.

Despite the confidence in Berlin at winning over the 27 heads of state and government, who would need to offer their unanimous support once a request is made, officials in Brussels fear Downing Street's proposal for a delay could still tee up a potential disaster next week with a high risk that the leaders could react in unexpected ways.

We've seen one of these examples recently, when Theresa May called a snap election in 2017, losing her the overall Tory majority in the Commons, a decision which haunts her premiership to this day.

"It is hard to see what more we can do", the statement said, adding that the latest vote "significantly increased" the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit.

'If there is a solution to the current impasse, it can only be found in London.

Speaking after the announcement of the vote, where United Kingdom lawmakers rejected the Brexit deal by 391 to 242, a hoarse and dejected May expressed "profound regret" at the result, telling MPs that they would have a chance to vote on whether to accept a "no deal" Brexit on Wednesday.

'Should there be a United Kingdom reasoned request for an extension, the EU27 will consider it and decide by unanimity.

An extension would need the backing of all 27 remaining European Union countries.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier echoed the view, saying there was nothing more Brussels could do.

"The impasse can only be solved in the UK". We will continue our no-deal preparations and ensure that we will be ready if such a scenario arises.

Meanwhile Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's representative in Brexit negotiations, said: 'Brexit was about taking back control, instead the United Kingdom spiralled out of control. If this happens we will fully engage'.

He wrote on Twitter: 'Deeply saddened by the outcome of the Brexit vote this evening. There are reports that cabinet has agreed a Brexit delay until the end of May. And time is nearly up.

The margin was smaller than May's 230-vote defeat in January, but the result was still decisive and plunged the country into fresh instability just 17 days before the planned exit day of March 29.

The PM had raced to Strasbourg for last-ditch talks on Monday night in the hope that new assurances on the Irish backstop would help her deal over the line.

The message was repeated by a spokeswoman for European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the European Research Group of Brexiteer MPs, said he felt the rejected deal had not delivered on the commitment to leave the EU cleanly and that the backstop would have kept the United Kingdom in the customs union.

The vote will, though, after pressure from colleagues, be a free vote where Tories can vote as they wish.
