Unvaccinated Kids Are Now Banned From Schools In Italy

Italian children are no longer allowed to attend school unless they can prove they have been properly vaccinated under a new law.

The law, passed in 2017 by a previous government, requires children to be vaccinated against 10 diseases in order to attend daycare and nursery school.

While it is too early to see what impact this law has had on vaccination levels, the local authority in Bologna has sent suspension letters to the parents of 300 children, and 5,000 children have not yet provided their proof of vaccination documents, according to the BBC.

And fines as high as roughly $560 could also be implemented if older children - ages 6 through 16 - are unvaccinated, according to the BBC.

The required vaccinations are polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, pertussis, measles, rubella, mumps, chicken pox and Haemophilus influenzae type B.

The city of Bologna reportedly has at least 300 children who now do not comply with the vaccination requirements and are at risk of suspension from school.

Historically, pro-vaccination schemes have been met with scepticism in Italy.

"Now everyone has had time to catch up", Health Minister Giulia Grillo told La Repubblica.

After months of heated debate, a law in Italy has finally entered into force, mandating that children must be vaccinated to be accepted into school.

"No vaccine, no school", she said of the new rules.

Italian schoolchildren will be unable to attend school if they aren't vaccinated. Those people believe that vaccines are unsafe and, depending on what misinformation they have absorbed, can cause everything from autism and attention deficit disorder to "vaccine overload", a made-up condition that is not an actual medical term.

Across the world, health authorities are grappling with a global resurgence of measles, with record numbers recorded in Europe and deadly outbreaks in the Philippines and Madagascar. That's the point at which so many people have been vaccinated against a given disease that those that have forgone their shots will still be unlikely to catch it, but it's hard to see what goal a "flexible" system serves beyond preserving opt-outs for antivaxxers.
