  • Senator Who Blamed Muslims For New Zealand Shootings Punches Teen After Egging

The egging was nearly certainly in response to Anning's very bad statement to the New Zealand mosque shootings, which killed 49 people on Friday.

The internet has a new hero - egg boy.

WATCH: This is the moment Senator Fraser Anning was egged by a teenage boy during a press conference in Melbourne.

"The 17-year-old has been released pending further enquiries". Anning's supporters then scuffled with the young man while a staffer pulled the lawmaker away from the altercation.

His comments sparked outrage across the country, and an online petition calling for his removal from parliament gained over 265 000 signatures within 24 hours.

He was late released by the police without any charge.

In a written statement issued by his office, Senator Anning said that [the terrorist attack] highlighted the growing fear of "Muslim presence" within Australia and New Zealand.

France and South Africa have both given their initial support to the plans, while emphasising there are details to be worked on. World Rugby Vice-Chairman Agustín Pichot added: "We are at an important time in our game's history".

"Rather than demonstrating empathy and compassion, he has chosen instead to vent his racist prejudice and hatred against Islam and Muslims by blaming the victims instead of the criminal perpetrators", he said in a statement today.

"Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament", Morrison said.

Sen. Fraser Anning came under blistering criticism over tweets on Friday including one that said: "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?"

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison denounced Anning's comments.

Shadow foreign affairs minister Penny Wong has condemned Mr Anning's comments as "shameful and pathetic" and said she was " anxious by the rise in extremist views".

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the mass shooting as a terrorist attack and one of New Zealand's "darkest days".

"I do wonder if he's made Australians less safe overseas", he told reporters in Melbourne.
