April, the world-famous mother giraffe, gave birth to her fifth calf Saturday.
So far, keepers at her home in the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York have confirmed she is giving birth, and giraffe hooves are visibly protruding.
It's a boy! April the Giraffe gave birth to a healthy male calf on Saturday March 16 around noon at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York.
At the time of this writing, a livestream of April and her newborn has over 40,000 viewers.
Giraffes are usually pregnant for between 14 and 15 months.
'With wild giraffe numbers plummeting annually, every calf born counts, ' Patch added.
In addition to Tajiri and her youngest offspring, April is also mom to three others, which were born behind the lens. More than a million people watched the live feed as she gave birth in, appropriately enough, April of that year. That came as a surprise for the small zoo 130 miles (209 kilometers) northwest of New York City.
April most recently gave birth to her fourth calf "Taj" in April 2017.
After two hours of labour, the new calf lay motionless on the floor for a couple of minutes before interacting with April. It's one of the longest gestation periods in the animal kingdom. Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch said that the time that his "conduct and behavior" showed Tajiri was "very much ready to move on and get his own girlfriends".
Fans of April the Giraffe can rejoice because the well-known animal welcomed a baby boy on Saturday, park officials said.
