  • Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews leads his team against the Philadelphia Flyers Friday night

The improving Chicago Blackhawks are headed in the right direction, although their latest win was a wild ride.

The Blackhawks almost blew a five-goal lead, hanging on for a 5-4 win in Toronto in a game that saw the Maple Leafs, trailing 5-1 after 40 minutes, fire 29 shots at replacement goaltender Collin Delia in a third-period comeback that fell just short.

Duncan Keith, Dominik Kahun and Alex DeBrincat also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won four in a row.

Collin Delia replaced Chicago's starting goalie Corey Crawford after the second period, and was in net for the third, when the Maple Leafs peppered him with 29 shots, falling just four shots shy of the National Hockey League record for most in a period.

"We played really well in the first period and most of the second", Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton said.

Corey Crawford stopped 17 of 18 shots through two periods before leaving the game due to illness. Colin Delia made 26 saves during the onslaught in the third.

"We've got to learn from the third period because that was way too close", added forward Marcus Kruger.

Zajac showed some deft hands in front as he tied the score 2-2 with 19 seconds left in the first period. Going into Wednesday's game with the Maple Leafs they had hit the over 27 of 32 times, and the five they didn't, three of those were a push. They sit six points out of a playoff spot with 12 games remaining.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have allowed three or less goals in 10 of their last 13 games.

Toronto, which beat Chicago at the United Center in a wild 7-6 overtime affair back in October, finally got on the board with 1:33 left in the period when Rielly had his shot deflected in by Johnsson for his 20th.

The Flyers are 4-0 in their last 4 games playing on 0 days rest, 8-2 in their last 10 road games and 5-2 in their last 7 games as a road underdog. The Philadelphia Flyers are averaging three goals per game and are scoring on 17.1 percent of their power play opportunities.

"I tried that early if you remember, I tried to put the line back together, they weren't ready to go", said Babcock after practice in Vegas on February 13.

The Maple Leafs put 29 shots on net in that final 20 minutes, leaving them one shot shy of being the eighth National Hockey League team to ever put 30+ shots on goal in a single period.

NOTES: Chicago is 14-3-2 in its last 19 games against the Leafs ... However, officials on the ice in Toronto ruled that Delia knocked the net off accidentally, denying the Leafs of a clean opportunity at a game-tying goal.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs meet Tuesday in National Hockey League action at the Scotiabank Arena.
