A video of one of the shootings was live streamed on Facebook by a man identifying himself as Brenton Tarrant. "If they are not of our people, but live in our lands, they must be removed".

President Donald Trump, who has a record of Islamophobic rhetoric, online behavior and policies, tweeted out his "warmest sympathy and best wishes" to the people of New Zealand.
