  • College admissions scandal generated disgust and outrage. But what exactly was the crime

The student was one of two who applied to the elite New Haven school with a bogus, paid-for recommendation from women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith, Yale said in a statement.

The US Education Department has opened investigations into eight universities tied to a major admissions scam, Politico has reported, citing people close to the matter.

A Yale spokesperson made the announcement in an interview Sunday, making the unnamed girl the first to be dropped from a school as a result of the college admissions scandal. Yale did not provide any other details about the student. In the case of the Yale student who was accepted, he is accused of creating a fraudulent athletic profile of the student and paying Meredith $400,000 after the student got in.

According to court documents, the mastermind behind the scheme, William "Rick" Singer, paid Ernst nearly $3 million in bribes to help secure admission for fake tennis recruits.

In exchange for a promised bribe, Meredith designated the applicant as a woman's soccer recruit to help her get in, despite knowing she didn't play competitive soccer, according to the documents.

Prosecutors say this is considered the biggest college admissions scandal ever prosecuted by the United States Justice Department. "If Yale determines that the allegation is true, the student's admission is rescinded, based on language in the application that requires applicants to affirm that everything in the application is true and complete".

Almost a dozen test administrators and coaches accused in the college admissions scandal are set to face a judge in Boston's Moakley Federal Courthouse on Monday. The parents of the student allegedly paid Singer $1.2 million.

They include former Georgetown tennis coach Gordon Ernst, former UCLA men's soccer coach Jorge Salcedo and Wake Forest women's volleyball coach Bill Ferguson. The attorney added, "He is innocent of these charges and will prove so in court".

The alleged scheme involved helping students cheat on entrance exams, as well as getting non-athletic students admitted on fake athletic scholarships. Authorities charged at least 50 people, including "Full House" star Lori Loughlin and "Desperate Housewives" actress Felicity Huffman.

Mr Singer sent Mr Meredith a copy of the student's resume around November 2017, noting he would "revise" the applicant's art portfolio to "soccer".

Yale President Peter Salovey said this month he was "profoundly dismayed and disturbed" by the FBI's findings, but he emphasized that Meredith "no longer works at the university", which he described as the "victim of a crime". "I want to assure our community that I am committed to making certain the integrity of the admissions and athletic recruitment processes is not undermined again".
