  • Julian Assange extradition

Most cyber-attacks started Thursday and came from Britain, France, Romania, the United States, Brazil and Ecuador, Deputy Minister of Telecommunications Patricio Real told a press conference.

Ecuador said on Monday it has suffered 40 million cyber attacks on the webpages of public institutions since stripping Wikileaks founder Julian Assange of political asylum. Those attacks hit the country's foreign ministry, central bank, office of the president, internal revenue service and a number of ministries and universities particularly hard. No data theft has been reported. Assange faces possible extradition to the United States - where he could be tried on allegations of hacking and conspiring with fellow whistleblower Chelsea Manning. Assange remained in the embassy, over time apparently wearing out Ecuador's patience; while he was there, Wikileaks released caches of hacked emails from Democratic Party email systems, Assange's Twitter DMs with Donald Trump Jr.

Moreno accused Assange of interfering in the "processes of other states" and "spying".

Portugal bus crash: Dozens killed on Madeira island
The mayor told the Lusa news agency that multiple people were killed, but the total death toll was not immediately clear. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is flying to the island to visit the scene, Lusa said.

The U.S. indictment, originally issued in secret by an Alexandria, Virginia-based grand jury in March 2018, said Assange in March 2010 engaged in a conspiracy to help Manning crack a password for a classified U.S. government network.

After his arrest, US prosecutors announced charges against Assange for allegedly conspiring with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to gain access to a government computer as part of one of the largest compromises of classified information in USA history. Those ranged from diplomatic cables to other data implicating USA military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan in covering up civilian casualties, enabling torture, and perhaps most infamously, opening fire in Baghdad from Apache gunships, killing at least a dozen, including two Reuters journalists.

If extradited on the specific hacking charge alone, however, the Verge reported that legal experts say the US cannot simply slap him with additional charges like espionage - which Assange's lawyers claim could earn him the death penalty.
