More than 50 people were feared to have been killed in Myanmar when jade miners and machinery were buried under a mound of tailings late on Monday, a member of parliament and a rescue worker said.

The disaster struck near Maw Wun Kalay, a village in the gemstone-rich Hpakant area of Kachin state.

A local official said it was "very hard to retrieve the bodies" and only three had been recovered. "It is very hard to retrieve the bodies". It is not possible because they are buried under mud.

"Three dead bodies have been recovered from the mud", Kyaw Swa Aung, the township's administrator told the Anadolu news agency, adding that a search and rescue operation was ongoing.

Dozens of people die each year in landslides or collapses in the jade mining industry. Such accidents are not rare and usually occur when mountainous piles of mining scraps slide down on people scavenging pieces of jade.

Hpakant produces some of the best-quality jade in the world, according to Al Jazeera.

Its production in Myanmar was worth around £23bn in 2014, environmental advocacy group Global Witness claim.

The country's lucrative jade industry is dominated by companies and businessmen linked to leaders of the previous military government.
