  • Sudan protest leaders have called for a 'million-strong' march to put pressure on the army as talks drag on over who should run the country

"The military council has the chance to participate in the state that we are working on ... but might lead us to the risk of straying into something unpleasant", said Khalid Omar, one of the leaders of the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces.

Protesters continuing to camp outside the military headquarters to demand the complete overhaul of the regime.

On April 16, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC), issued a decision to sack former Attorney General Omer Ahmed Mohamed Abdel-Salam and two other top prosecutors in the wake of the ouster of al-Bashir by the military.

Three armed groups are now part of the Alliance for Freedom and Change which spearheaded protests since December that led to the ouster of Bashir.

The democracy demonstrators continued noisily to occupy the street outside Sudan's military headquarters.

Sudan's military toppled Bashir last month after weeks of mass protests against his 30-year rule, but the demonstrators have not been satisfied with the Transitional Military Council that took control of the country after the coup.

According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the committee is calling for the establishment of a ten-member presidential council - composed of seven civilians and three military figures - to run the nation's affairs until presidential elections are held.

The protesters, led by the Sudanese Professionals Association, would allow the same number of soldiers but on a 15-persons council.

Those already filling the square Thursday kept up a festive atmosphere, with loudspeakers blaring out revolutionary songs and vendors selling fruits and peanuts. As both sides in the standoff remained intransigent, they held separate news conferences on Tuesday to explain their divergent views.

Protesters and activists have been negotiating with the TMC to form a joint civilian-military body to oversee the period following the forced departure of long-term President Omar Bashir.

"Today's rally is a message to the military council as well as regional and worldwide players that the Sudanese people will not give up on their demand for a civilian government", said Ahmed Rabie, a leader in the SPA, which led the four months of protests that drove al-Bashir from power.

The announcement on the joint civilian-military council on Saturday was seen as a breakthrough aimed at paving the way for detailed negotiations on a roadmap for the formation of a civilian government.

He said across the country six security personnel were killed during protests on Monday.

Veteran Bashir opponent Sadiq al-Mahdi warned Sudanese protesters against provoking the military.

The spokesman for the military council, Lieutenant General Shamseddin al-Kabbashi, said the "armed forces must remain in the sovereign council" due to ongoing tensions in the country. Three armed groups are now part of the Alliance for Freedom and Change which spearheaded protests since December that led to the ouster of Bashir.

The protesters have won support from Western governments for their demand of civilian rule.

He refused to give up power, leading to a coup.
