Scientists say nature is in more trouble now than at any other time in human history, with extinction looming over 1 million species of plants and animals.

The assessment adds that this decline would continue till 2050.

The report said global financial and economic systems would have to evolve to build a global sustainable economy, steering away from the current limited paradigm of economic growth.

"The member states of IPBES Plenary have now acknowledged that, by its very nature, transformative change can expect opposition from those with interests vested in the status quo, but also that such opposition can be overcome for the broader public good", said Watson.

"That would mean a fundamental, system-wide reorganisation of technology, economics and society, " he warned.

It's not just future generations who are vulnerable; people living today are at risk unless the loss of ecosystems and creatures upon which the human race depends for food, clean water and a stable climate is reversed.

Since the beginning of the last century (1900), availability of native species in most of the land-based habitats has declined by 20 per cent. Almost 75 per cent of all freshwater resources are now used for crop and livestock rearing activities.

It is believed that around 40 percent of amphibians, 25 percent of mammals, 34 percent of conifers, 14 percent of birds and 31 percent of sharks and rays are "threatened with extinction".

Meanwhile, up to $577bn in annual global crop yields are now at risk from pollinator loss and as many as 300 million people are at increased risk of floods and hurricanes because of loss of coastal habitats and protection. You can further help us by making a donation.

The picture is less clear for insect species, but available evidence supports a tentative estimate of 10 percent being threatened. More to it, thousands of these would extinct within decades.
