Shamima Begum could be "hanged" in Bangladesh, says minister

  • Bangladeshi foreign minister Abdul Momen was clear that Begum could face the death penalty if taken to Bangladesh

Bangladesh's government has said that Shamima Begum, the teenage Londoner who fled to Syria, is not their problem.

Abdul Momen said Bangladesh had "nothing to do" with Ms Begum, and warned she could be "hanged".

Although Ms Begum travelled to Syria to join IS group, she has not admitted any terror offences.

Her case has led to serious criticism of the United Kingdom government, which has been accused of rendering Begum stateless and abandoning her and her young child, who died just three weeks after being born.

She appealed to the Home Secretary to allow her back but her request was rejected and her British Citizenship was subsequently revoked to prevent her from returning to the United Kingdom - a move Mr Javid made in "order to protect his country". It was thought Begum had a claim to Bangladeshi citizenship through her family, but Bangladeshi officials have denied this, leaving her in a state of limbo.

Abdul Momen told the BBC that Ms Begum has "nothing to do" with his country.

"She is not a Bangladeshi citizen and has never applied for Bangladeshi citizenship".

Her claim to Bangladeshi nationality through her mother is believed to have played a role in the British Home Office's decision, the BBC reports.

"If anyone is found to be involved with terrorism, we have a simple rule, there will be capital punishment".

But Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since ruled out such a possibility of her being considered for Bangladeshi citizenship.

Tasnime Akunjee, the family's lawyer, said Momen had confirmed "what is obvious to all" in that Begum was born, raised and radicalised in the United Kingdom and was "in no way Bangladesh's problem".

Begum ran away from her London home as a schoolgirl after reading about the Islamic State online.

"Bangladeshi law is very clear".

Since the terror group's "collapse" in Syria past year, the teenager - who has had three children who all died in Syria - has been living in refugee camps.

Begum resurfaced in a refugee camp earlier this year and said she wanted to return to Britain. The family have reportedly begun legal proceedings to challenge the move.

The UK government said it does not comment on individual cases but does not take the decision to remove citizenship "lightly".

Under the 1981 British Nationality Act, a person can be deprived of their citizenship if the home secretary is satisfied it would be "conducive to the public good" and they would not become stateless as a result.
