A 7.2-magnitude natural disaster has hit Papua New Guinea.

The quake hit this morning about 33 kilometres from the country's eastern side and struck at a depth of 127km.

The USGS-linked Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami after the quake.

Christopher Lam, who was in Lae, about 100km north of Bulolo, said the rumble was audible.

"It was big. You can hear it. Got stuff thrown around in the house and the power is now cut off", he wrote to Twitter with a video of his home during the quake.

Earthquakes of a magnitude between 7 and 7.9 have the potential to cause serious damage, and it is estimated that only 20 earthquakes of this magnitude occur each year.

"We have no reports as yet" of serious damage, Inspector Leo Kaikas, Bulolo police station commander, told AFP.

Staff at Bulolo's Pine Lodge hotel said there was very minor damage from objects falling off tables, but nothing more serious. The fire department in Lae said no one had yet called in to report damage or injuries so far following the quake. "It lasted a little more than 30 seconds".

"Things seem to have returned to normal".

There are estimated to be around 110,000 people living within 50km of the epicentre, according to United Nations data. "No structural damage here, though I'm not sure about other buildings in the city".

The scale of that disaster did not become apparent for days due to PNG's poor communications and infrastructure.
