"I hope when I rejoin my family an friends that my country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice and lies at the helm of our country", Cohen said Monday morning outside his Park Avenue home in Manhattan to a mob of TV cameramen and reporters who had staked out the place.

For much of the day, Cohen "can pretty much do what he wants", Mr Frantz said.

Cohen is headed to a prison about 75 miles north of NYC.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons, which runs the facility, confirmed by email Cohen was in its custody.

Cohen arrived just before noon at the complex, where he will be assigned to the 113-inmate satellite camp, apart from medium-security prison that houses another 745 offenders behind tall fences and coils of razor wire.

Michael Cohen is set to begin a three-year prison sentence for crimes including campaign finance violations related to hush-money payments made on Donald Trump's behalf.

Since mid-March, federal prosecutors in NY have rebuffed Cohen's repeated offers to provide more information about alleged wrongdoing by Trump and other people in his orbit, Davis said.

Cohen's lawyer and spokesman, Lanny Davis, said Cohen would continue to be available to co-operate with law enforcement, though it's unclear how much his co-operation is wanted. Cohen helped one journalist to get back on his feet.

Cohen, the president's former lawyer and fixer who once gushed over Trump in over-the-top media appearances, told Congress in February that Trump was a racist and a cheat. The information gathered in the raids contributed to a series of criminal charges against Cohen that caused his dramatic split with Trump.

Mr. Cohen declined to pursue a formal cooperation agreement with the Manhattan federal prosecutors, which would have required him to disclose any crimes he may have committed or been aware of.

Cohen broke with Trump in July 2018, telling ABC News he meant to put family and loyalty to his country ahead of the president.

Shusterman, 49, has two adult children with Cohen - Samantha and Jake. I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is. He is a con man.

He cautioned them that following Trump, "as I did blindly" will cause them to "suffer the same consequences that I am suffering".

Cohen was sentenced for tax evasion, lying to Congress, and campaign finance violations. "They might be because he of what he said, it might be because of how he acts".

Cohen, 52, is the only person charged with a crime in connection with the hush-money payments to women who allegedly had affairs with Trump.
