  • Alaska plane crash: 2 floatplanes in Ketchikan midair collision - 5 dead

The second, smaller plane-a de Havilland Beaver-was carrying four cruise guests and a pilot, on an independent tour.

The ship arrived in Ketchikan, a city of 13,000 located along Alaska's southeastern panhandle, on Monday morning.

The Coast Guard says the 11th person on board that plane is missing.

Cindy Cicchetti told The Associated Press that the ship captain announced that two planes were in an accident.

Three people were still missing, US Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

Princess Cruises said in a statement sighted by Fox News that the larger plane-a de Havilland Otter-was carrying 10 cruise guests and a pilot, on an excursion sold through the cruise line. One was in critical condition, three are in serious condition and six are in fair condition.

Clint Johnson, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board in Alaska confirmed that he could only provide "sketchy details" but that the agency is sending a team to investigate the crash sites.

Spokeswoman Mischa Chernick had no other information on other passengers and referred questions to the Alaska State Troopers.

It is unknown if there is a connection between the two aircraft or if it's coincidental that they went down at the same time, near the same place. A Ketchikan Fire Department representative said around 3:30 p.m. Monday that more people had been found, but could not specify how many or what condition they are in.

As for the rescue operations, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios said the USCG is now unaware of the circumstances surrounding why the aircraft went down, but that crews are working as quickly as possible to locate the missing passengers.

Local authorities reported five were killed and 10 injured.

Rios says it's not immediately clear if the planes crashed or had anything to do with each other going down Monday.

AP reported that weather conditions in the area of the crash comprised high overcast skies with 9 miles per hour southeast winds.
