Bertens triumphs in Madrid and halts Halep push for top spot

  • Naomi Osaka Today it was a drama so much drama in my head

The 27-year-old player from the Netherlands looked dominant throughout the summit showdown as she eased past reigning French Open champion Halep 6-4, 6-4 in nearly one and a half hour to lift the title.

Bertens more than played her part, becoming a deserving victor and the first woman ever to win the title without even dropping a set.

Simona Halep has continued her bid to regain the world number one ranking by beating Switzerland's Belinda Bencic to reach the Madrid Open final.

Bencic worked a set point in the 12th game, only to see Halep fire off a couple of winners to hold, and they headed to a tie-break.

Yet Bencic's momentum completely disappeared in the third as she became the third player in this tournament to be shut out in a set by Halep, who dished out a bagel against Margarita Gasparyan and two in her demolition of Viktoria Kuzmova.

"It is normal at this level, I expect tough matches all the time", Halep said.

Tsitsipas' stunning victory means he reaches his fourth ATP final of the season, while fully vindicating those that have him circled as a future star of the men's game.

Jimmy Carter recovering from surgery after fall, Carter Center says
He received his first radiation treatment at age 90, and four months later, he was - remarkably - cancer free. Carter also continues to teach Sunday school lessons Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.

Osaka started the match with a pair of easy holds and in between, had a break point on Bencic's first service game, but she netted a forehand and the Swiss escaped with a hold to keep pace.

"I found Simona was playing better than me the whole match", Bencic told reporters. "But overall, I'm pretty happy how I fought". The Swiss opened with a fine touch volley victor, and she edged to 3-0 with a backhand return-of-serve victor.

Halep was ruthless, determined and near flawless again as the match headed to its conclusion in double-quick time.

And so the mighty Romanian maintains her assault on reclaiming not just the Madrid title but the No1 ranking.

Halep and Bertens have split four tour meetings with the Dutchwoman taking the 2018 Cincinnati final.

"It's going to be really tough (against Halep), we played each other in the past so I know it will be a tough battle, but I'm ready for it, one more push here". "She deserved to win the match, definitely", she said.

Halep had no complaints, congratulating her opponent while admitting she played into Bertens' hands. I love it also here.
