With his dives, Vescovo became the first person to have been to the summit of Mount Everest, been to the deepest recessPatrick Lahey, President of Triton Submarineses of the ocean, and skied to both the North and South poles.

His record breaks those set by U.S. Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard who touched down on the seafloor at the depth of 10,912 meters in their submersible in the 1960 and movie director James Cameron who reached the same limit in 2012.

Deep in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Vescovo dove 35,853 feet beneath the waves, breaking previous records by about 36 feet.

"Going to the extremes I believe is a natural inclination of man", Vescovo he says.

Other than the plastic waste, Victor in his submersible also spotted four new species including prawn-like crustaceans, a creature called a spoon worm 7,000m-down and a pink snailfish at 8,000m.

Vescovo's dive was the first out of four dives carried out in the deep-sea pocket, known as Challenger Deep, over three weeks, starting in late April.

"Most importantly we have opened the door to the final frontier - the exploration of the hadal zone and the workings of the deepest parts of the world's oceans".

The Tonga Trench was previously measured at 10,882 metres deep and is known as the second-deepest ocean trench in the world after the Marina Trench.

The Molloy Deep has yet to be explored, and Vescovo's team will be there in August, according to CNN.

At almost seven miles deep, you could fit the whole of Mount Everest into it.

Tests by Newcastle University researchers found that sea creatures living in the deepest reaches of the sea had fragments of plastic in their stomachs and muscles. Atlantic Productions for Discovery Channel/Tamara Stubbs/Handout via REUTERS.

Vescovo said, 'It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did. It is built to dive for 16 hours at a time-but also has emergency air supplies for a further 96 hours.

"Honestly, towards the end, I simply turned the thrusters off, leaned back in the cockpit, and enjoyed a tuna fish sandwich while I very slowly drifted just above the bottom of the deepest place on earth, enjoying the view and appreciating what the team had done technically", he recalls. "It was a very happy, peaceful moment for me".
