North Korea says it is suffering its worst drought in almost four decades amid concern about a food crisis in the country.

State Media KCNA reported Wednesday that a "severe drought has been lingering in all parts" of the country. Thus far in May, North Korea has seen 0.02 inches of rain. However, Pyongyang City, Nampho City, Kangwon Province and North and South Hwanghae provinces have seen no rainfall. It said that is the lowest level since 1982, when North Korea received 51.2 millimeters (2 inches) of rain on average during the same period.

The country is attempting to secure water in order to prevent drought damage.

He argued that there are multiple limitations in estimating North Korea's food situation in the absence of official prices or those issued by an official organization due to the nature of the country's regime.

He said if the North was hit by a serious food shortage, the price of corn should go up as people tend to buy it for their meals because it's normally 50 percent cheaper than rice. The 2018-2019 food crop production is an estimated 4.9 million metric tons, the lowest since the 2008-2009 season.

The assessment refers to the two United Nations agencies' joint report that said the impoverished country is facing its worst harvest in 10 years this year due to prolonged dry spells and abnormally high temperatures, coupled with limited supplies of agricultural inputs. Partly driven by unfavorable climatic conditions, the shortage has been exacerbated by limited agricultural supplies such as fertilizer and machinery.
