IndyCar to Implement New Aeroscreen Cockpit Safety Device in 2020

The Aeroscreen is anchored by a titanium frame that attaches to the cockpit of the race vehicle in three locations and may be able to be used with tear-offs - that is, layered sheets of plastic that endurance racing cars use that can be peeled off during a race rather than requiring to be cleaned.

IndyCar will use an "Aeroscreen" developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies for cockpit protection beginning next season.

IndyCar has been looking for a solution to driver head safety ever since Justin Wilson was fatally injured when he was struck by debris at Pocono Raceway in 2015.

Additionally, the laminated polycarbonate screen will include an anti-reflective coating on the interior of the screen, an integrated anti-fogging heating element and possibly tear-offs, all of which will be produced by associated third-party companies.

"We the drivers at IndyCar always wanted to make sure that if we did run something that it was going to be something great, not something rushed, something that hadn't been tested well", said IndyCar veteran Scott Dixon, victor of the 2008 Indy 500 and a five-time series champion.

IndyCar this month introduced a debris deflector mounted at the front of the cockpit that was first used on the road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month - one race earlier than the planned debut at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

The titanium framework will mount in three areas around the cockpit - the chassis centerline, two-rear side mounts and roll hoop integration - to provide enhanced load-bearing capabilities. "They are constantly looking and evaluating what needs to be done".

When fitted, the device's load-bearing capability is expected to be 150 kiloNewtons, equivalent to that of the Halo device now used in Formula One. "The Aeroscreen is just the latest effort in continuing INDYCAR's efforts to enhance driver safety". A kilonewton is equal to approximately 225 pounds, which is a force of gravity rating, not static weight or mass. Force is equal to mass multiplied by acceleration. A cockpit cooling system is also being developed to work with it.
