David Pocock's Super Rugby career is over effective immediately after medical consultation showed that his lingering calf injury was not improving, forcing the renowned flanker to call time on his Australian domestic career.

Pocock, 31, has failed to shake off a calf injury that has dogged his season with the ACT Brumbies and there had been speculation he would sit out the rest of the season to ensure he can play in the World Cup from September to November.

Pocock said he has been told by specialists his current injury is a rare one and it is hard to determine how long it might take to heal.

'Personally I'm disappointed, I guess, ' Pocock said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Pocock officially announced his Brumbies and Australian domestic rugby retirement on Tuesday afternoon (28 May) after it was chose to rule him out for the rest of the Super Rugby season.

"I certainly hope to contribute off the field for the rest of the Brumbies Super Rugby campaign".

Pocock, who will take up a contract in Japanese rugby after the World Cup, did not say whether he wants to continue with the Wallabies after the tournament in Japan.

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar conceded last week that Pocock may have already played his last Brumbies game as he prepares for one last tilt at winning a World Cup in Michael Cheika's Wallabies.

He made his debut for the Western Force in 2006 just weeks after turning 18, and went on to collect 69 caps with the Force over seven years before moving to the Brumbies in 2013.

"They've supported me through injury and given me the opportunity to work on my game and my leadership as part of an incredible group of men. It's just one of those things that you've got to deal with", Pocock told reporters in Canberra of the abrupt end to his 13 years of professional rugby in Australia.

"To not be a part of that is very disappointing, but I'll keep contributing and doing what I can to help out".

"To pull on the Wallabies jersey again is obviously my goal", Pocock added. "I'll be doing everything that I can to get myself right and get into the best shape I can".

Pocock, considered a master of the breakdown and vital to Australia's World Cup hopes, is also known for his outspoken activism in areas such as gay rights, conservation and global warming. I am grateful for their support.
