  • Juan Guaido who many nations have recognised as the country's rightful interim ruler speaks at a rally against the government of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro in Guatire Venezuela

Last week, Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez and Miranda state governor Hector Rodriguez went to Oslo on behalf of the government, while opposition lawmaker Stalin Gonzalez and two advisrs represented Guaido's side. The Norwegian foreign ministry declined to comment. After that session, Venezuela's US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido downplayed the importance of the visit by his envoys to Norway. "We want a peace deal".

The United States has refused to speak to Maduro on anything but logistical matters, calling his leadership illegitimate.

"We note the talks in Norway".

Venezuela ended 2018 with inflation above 130,000 percent while its crisis-hit economy shrank by almost half in the last five years, the central bank claimed Tuesday - a figure far below global estimates.

"We aren't beggars", Maduro said at the time.

"Whatever is discussed in there, whatever is decided, has absolutely no legitimacy because it is an illegitimate regime presiding over that body", the U.S. ambassador to the conference, Robert Wood, told reporters outside the council's chamber.

Millions of people have fled the country as astronomical rises in the cost of consumer goods and broader economic woes have made food and basic supplies unobtainable for average people. However, Maduro and ruling socialist party continue to control state institutions including the military, state oil company PDVSA and the central bank.

In that regard, the head of State asked the opposition leadership "to be courageous and tell its supporters the truth, because Venezuela needs to reach secure peace agreements".

Guaido in January assumed a rival interim presidency, citing Venezuela's constitution, and denounced Maduro's government as illegitimate after he secured re-election previous year in a vote widely criticized as rigged.

Vecchio also spoke with WLRN about the negotiations taking place now in Norway between the regime and the opposition over holding new presidential elections in Venezuela.

Norway has a history of playing the role of facilitator in peace negotiations.
