Trump defends Mexico deal as criticism continues

But there remains deep skepticism among some American officials - and even Mr. Trump himself - about whether the Mexicans have agreed to do enough, whether they will follow through on their promises, and whether, even if they do, that will reduce the flow of migrants at the southwestern border. "There is now going to be great cooperation between Mexico & the U.S., something that didn't exist for decades".

Trump added that if Mexico fails to meet his expectations "for some unknown reason", then "we can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs".

Murtaugh applauded Trump for using "the threat of tariffs to bring Mexico to the table" and "showing that he is willing to use every tool in his toolbox to protect the American people".

During a phone call Friday evening when he was briefed on the agreement, Mr. Trump quizzed his lawyers, diplomats and immigration officials about whether they thought the deal would work.

But it was business as usual over the weekend at the busiest crossing point along Mexico's porous southern border with Guatemala.

There is further uncertainty around Trump's comments on Saturday that Mexico had agreed to "immediately begin" buying "large quantities" of agricultural goods from US farmers. Mexican officials have described their commitment as an accelerated deployment.

The U.S. also hailed Mexico's agreement to embrace the expansion of a program under which some asylum-seekers are returned to Mexico as they wait out their cases.

"The president has completely overblown what he purports to have achieved. These are agreements that Mexico had already made and, in some case, months ago", the former congressman from Texas said on ABC's "This Week". Evidence of Mexico's promised crackdown on new arrivals trying to reach the United States was nowhere to be seen, as a small fleet of rafts carried migrants hoping to escape the violence of Central America.

"We need a decent relationship with Mexico", added Sanders, who is a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

"I hope to god that I will be able to help my sons escape the hell that we were living back home", she said, adding that she fled Guatemala after her eldest son was almost beaten to death by gang members seeking to recruit him. Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Republican and chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told "Fox News Sunday".

The New York Times claimed the program's expansion was agreed upon in December and that Mexico had already agreed in March to deploy its National Guard.

Trump echoed the same in his tweets, insisting the deal was being misrepresented and demanding more credit from the press. He began by pointing out that the Times was correct that such border actions had been something the us was trying to get from Mexico for a long time.

He also teased the idea that more was agreed to than was announced Friday, saying that "some things" and "one in particular" that had been left out of the release but would be "announced at the appropriate time". Instead of releasing so-called asylum-seekers into the interior of the United States, often never to be seen again, tens of thousands will remain in Mexico while they await their court dates.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in Washington his team had also resisted USA requests to send deported Guatemalans to Mexico. "We were being put in a very hard and uncomfortable position to have to apply the same measures that were going to be placed on Mexican exports".

"Since 9/11, immigration has been more about border security than it ever has been before", said Victor Narro, director of UCLA Labor Center and professor in the labor and workplace studies department at the California university.

Migrant arrivals at the U.S. -Mexico border are surpassing 100,000 a month, including record numbers of families and unaccompanied minors.
