  • Paul Crowther was appearing at North Tyneside magistrates' court

A man who threw a milkshake over Nigel Farage during a city centre walkabout has admitted common assault and criminal damage.

Crowther is due to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning.

The politician's suit was left covered in the £5.25 banana and salted caramel Five Guys drink during an event in Newcastle ahead of last month's European elections.

Crowther told reporters at the time of the milkshake assault on Farage that his action was "a right of protest against people like him".

Paul Crowther speaks to police after Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage was hit with a milkshake during a campaign rally in Newcastle, England, Monday May 20, 2019.

The district judge Bernard Begley said Crowther would not be jailed but would have to carry out unpaid work.

He was also told to pay a £85 Victim Surcharge, £85 in legal costs and £350 compensation to Farage - for damaging his lapel microphone (£239), suit cleaning, distress, and inconvenience.

The court heard from the prosecution that a Facebook post before the incident made it clear Crowther meant to throw milkshake on the politician.

The court also heard a victim statement from Mr Farage, which said: "I am concerned because of the behaviour of individuals like this, the normal democratic process can not continue in a lawful and peaceful manner".

He said Crowther now regretted his actions.

Crowther has been dismissed from his job and threats have been made to a dog charity where he volunteered.

Hegarty said: "Ordinarily a man of his position would receive a caution".

Hegarty said the attack was not premeditated for long, pointing out the £5.25 price of the milkshake and that there were cheaper options nearby it was a planned incident.

A crowdfunding page was set up for Crowther in a bid to get "his milkshake money back".

In the immediate aftermath of the incident on 20 May, Farage was heard telling a member of security staff he "could have spotted that a mile off".

Later that day, the Brexit Party leader said: 'I won't even acknowledge the low-grade behaviour that I was subjected to this morning, I won't dignify it, I will ignore it.
