British arms sales to Saudi Arabia that were used in Yemen's war have been declared unlawful by the court of appeal because they contributed to indiscriminate civilian casualties in the bombing campaign from the Saudi-led coalition.
International Trade Secretary Liam Fox announced the decision in parliament after a British court ordered the government to "reconsider" the sales due to their humanitarian impact.
"We are carefully considering the implications of the judgement for decision making", he said after the ruling.
"We disagree with the judgement and will seek permission to appeal", Fox said, adding: "While we do this, we will not grant any new licenses to Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners which might be used in the conflict in Yemen".

The judges said Britain should have investigated "whether there was an historic pattern of breaches of worldwide humanitarian law on the part of the (Saudi-led) coalition, and Saudi Arabia in particular".
The case was brought by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade against the British government. Backed by a supply of arms and training by Western allies, including the United Kingdom and the USA, the coalition has been continuously accused of war crimes for striking civilian targets and for leading a blockade that has put millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation.
While the court's decision does not mean Britain must immediately halt arms exports, it does mean that there is a stay on the granting of next arms export licences to Saudi Arabia - Britain's richest Arab ally.
