A Sri Lankan cardinal on Thursday slammed his country's government for not preventing the Easter Sunday attacks at two churches and five hotels that killed more than 250 people.

The Sri Lankan Police have arrested over 1,000 suspects following the attacks.

The Extraordinary Gazette issued by President's Secretary Udaya R Seneviratne upon the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena says the emergency was extended in the best interest of public security.

Earlier on May 22, Sirisena extended the Emergency by a month as security forces continued nationwide raids to hunt down suspects linked to the attacks.

In May, Sirisena had told diplomats from Australia, Canada, Japan, the United States and European states that the situation was nearly back to normal, and he would allow the Emergency to lapse on June 22, PTI reported.

According to the Sri Lankan Constitution, Emergency can be declared for a month at a time, and must be ratified by Parliament within 10 days, reported.

The Acting Inspector General of Police ordered on Friday a criminal investigation into lapses by nine top police officers with regard to bombings.

He assured the diplomats that security forces had either detained or killed all those directly involved in the attacks, blamed on local extremists and claimed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terror group.

Sri Lanka's State Intelligence Service (SIS) has been criticised for failing to act on the Indian warnings.

The attacks sent shockwaves through the Indian Ocean island state, which had enjoyed relative peace since a civil war ended a decade ago.

A parliamentary public inquiry has been told that Mr Sirisena - who also holds the defence and law and order portfolios - failed to follow proper national security protocols.
