Australian Islamic State orphans rescued from Syria camp

Australia has gathered up eight children and grandchildren of two dead Australian Islamic State fighters from a Syrian refugee camp and will bring them home, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday.

Morrison had for months said he would not risk any Australian official to rescue Australians from Islamic State group-held territory.

The heavily pregnant daughter of slain IS fighter Khaled Sharrouf and seven other Australian children have been rescued from Syria in a dramatic rescue operation.

"They've got off to a frightful start in life as a result of the appalling decisions of their parents".

Aid group Save the Children said the Australian government's actions to help recover eight children from Syria is a welcome development.

"They've got off to a terrible start in life as a result of the appalling decisions of their parents and they'll find their home in Australia and I'm sure they'll be embraced by Australians and as a result of that embrace, I'm sure they'll live positive and happy lives", he added.

Eight Australian children caught in the Syrian war after their parents joined ISIS are on their way from a refugee camp to their homeland.

The prime minister on Monday repeated his concerns, adding that "repatriating these children was not a decision the Australian government made lightly".

"The Australian government must do all in its powers to return all Australians who remain trapped in these camps".

In April Panos Moumtzis, UN humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis, urged governments not to abandon 2,500 children held in a "restricted" section of the sprawling al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria.

Once in Australia, the Sharrouf children would be placed in the custody of their grandmother while the Rizvic children would resettle in Melbourne, the newspaper said.

Hoda, who was 11-years-old when she left Australia with her parents, told the ABC that she didn't know she was in Syria "until after we crossed the borders and I heard people speaking Arabic". And she told me we were in Syria.

It is the first time Australian children born to ISIS members have been rescued from Syria.

"We were brought here by our parents.

I think we need to keep it very much in perspective". "The profile and the publicity around this family will also make it quite problematic for them to just integrate back into normal life in Australia". "I started crying", she said.
