The agency attributed its report to an unnamed source, who said United Nations inspectors had recently weighed Iran's stockpile of low-enriched uranium.

United Nations inspectors on Monday said they were looking into reports from an Iranian news agency that Iran had broken the 300-kilogram stockpile limit for low-enriched uranium allowed under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran has vowed to begin enriching its stockpile of uranium to higher levels closer to weapons-grade later this month if world powers fail to negotiate new terms for the nuclear accord following the United States decision to withdraw from the agreement and restore crippling sanctions.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran's steps were "reversible" and urged Europe to accelerate its efforts to salvage the deal.

Earlier in June, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced that his country will further scale back commitments under the deal, setting the deadline for July 7.

Other Iranian news agencies contradicted the report on Fars, which is close to hard-liners that oppose the nuclear deal, and Iran's official news agency did not report the breach. "Our inspectors are on the ground and they will report to headquarters as soon as the LEU stockpile has been verified".

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will firmly continue its move to decrease the nuclear deal undertakings and to this end will soon take the first step and pass the ceiling of 300kg of enriched uranium", said a source to the Persian-language Khorassan newspaper, according to Fars.

Last week European officials announced that a new trading system (INSTEX), created to circumvent sanctions on Iran, was operational but Iranian officials have said it does not go far enough. Iran had ultimately made a decision to retaliate against USA actions. The US has blamed Tehran for the attacks, which it denies.

On 20 June, Iran shot down an unmanned U.S. drone, which Tehran said was over Iranian territory but Washington maintained was above global waters.

US President Donald Trump later said that he had cancelled a series of air strikes on Iran as his war planes were mid air, saying he changed his mind after being told how many lives were at risk.

"We continue to call on the Iranian regime not to obtain a nuclear weapon, to abide by their commitments to the global community", State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said at the time.
