Mexican city of Guadalajara hit with freak hail storm

Dozen of roads were closed and passengers were stranded after the huge blast of ice damaged buildings and brought the city to a standstill.

Locals were shocked and vehicles were trapped as the ice descended on the city. Machinery and protection soldiers were deployed to clear the streets after local officials reported mass flooding and fallen trees.

Some streets were transformed into rivers of dense moving hail and several people had to be rescued from the roofs of their cars.

A freak hailstorm has struck Guadalajara, one of Mexico's most populous cities, shocking residents and trapping vehicles in a deluge of ice pellets up to two metres deep.

The heavy hail hit as a tropical storm brewed off Mexico's south coast.
